• The Maryland Academy of Physician Assistants, Inc. is formally incorporated.

1978   

• MAPA holds its first CME Conference in Hagerstown, MD.

•     Membership is 25.

1979   

• The Board of Medical Examiners (BOME) defines all PA supervision as “onsite”.

1980 

• MAPA attempts, unsuccessfully, to reverse the BOME ruling
• Membership is 135.

1981  

• The BOME revises PA supervision definition after 275 PAs and Physicians showing up at the hearing.

  1982  

• MAPA celebrates five years. MAPA develops a traveling exhibit regarding the Academy

1984     

• MAPA’s first newsletter, NEWSLETTER, is published.

1985   

• MAPA retains an attorney.  Membership is 264.

1986   

• PA profession is incorporated into Maryland medical statue

• PAs become certified practitioners.

• MAPA gets a new logo.

1987  

• MAPA celebrates 10 years.

• MAPA hires lobbyist.

• CRNA sponsored bill is defeated.

• Second newsletter, MAPA PRESS, begins publication.

1988   

• Board of Physician Quality Assurance (BPQA) is formed to replace the BOME.

• Membership is 300.

1991 

• First of several bills seeking to allow International Medical Graduate (IMG), who were unable to  pass boards in the US, to become PAs, is defeated.

1992   

• MAPA celebrates fifteen years.

• A second IMG bill is defeated.

1993 

• A third IMG bill is defeated.

• MAPA’s first prescribing bill (HB# 1369) defeated and sent to summer study session for inpatient prescribing.

1994    

• Inpatient prescribing bill (HB# 1323) defeated.

• Membership is 320.

1997  

• MAPA celebrates twenty years.

• Inpatient prescribing bill passed.

• Political Action Committee formed.

• Website created.

1998   

• PA Advisory Committee revision bill passed.

• Instituted an “800” number for MAPA.

• Re-opened relations with Med Chi.

1999  

• PA Prescriptive Authority (HB# 674) is passed.

• the Source becomes the new MAPA newsletter.

• Membership is 630.

2000  

• Bill that would limit practice settings, defeated.

• Loyola PA program closes.

•  Richard Rohrs, PA-C, MAPA past president, is AAPA PA of the year.

2001

• Independent practice bill for NPs vetoed by governor.

• UMES opens PA Program.

•     MAPA sponsors the Carson Scholarship.

2002        

• MAPA celebrates twenty-five years.

• PA Technical Corrections Bill passes.

2003    

• BPQA becomes Maryland Board of Physicians and is mandated, by statute, to include a PA as a voting member of the board.

2006   

• Temporary Practice Letters bill passed.

• Supervising Physicians no longer required to co-sign charts.

•    Nurses must take conscious sedation orders from Physician Assistants.

2007     

• MAPA celebrates thirty years.

2012  

• MAPA celebrates thirty-five years.

• MdAPA has a new logo.
