The Physician Assistant Advisory Committee is a sub-committee of the Maryland Physician Board, which advises the Board on Physician Assistant matters. The PAAC consists of 7 members appointed by the Board, of which: three are licensed physicians, one specializing in surgery and one in primary care, three are certified physician assistants, either practicing or teaching in the State of Maryland, and one a consumer, selected by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The PAs will be selected by the Board from a list of names submitted by the Maryland Academy of Physician Assistants, and the State institutions of higher education with approved physician assistant programs. The Committee may elect its own Chair. The Committee members may serve a maximum of two consecutive three-year terms. If a vacancy occurs the Board will appoint a new member.

The PAAC reviews each delegation agreement which requires prior approval by the Board and, if needed, interviews the physician assistant and supervising physician to make recommendations to the Board. Selected applications for licensure, renewal, or reinstatement of physician assistants are reviewed, upon request. The Committee will then make recommendations to the Board as to what action to take on the application. The Committee also makes recommendations to the Board regarding regulation governing physician assistants and advises the Board on matters related to the practice of physician assistants.

The Committee reports to the Board any conduct of a supervising physician or a physician assistant that may be cause for disciplinary action and any alleged unauthorized practice of a physician assistant.

The PAAC generally meets with the MBP on the first Wednesday of every month at 4:00 PM. See the Calendar for further details. With the exception of disciplinary action discussions, the majority of the Committee’s activities conducted are open to the public.

The list of current PAAC members can be found here.
