ABOUT MARYLAND PAs
According to the 2023 NCCPA Statistical Report, there were 178,708 board certified PAs in the Nation, and 3,769 of those PAs call Maryland home! (NCCPA, 2023) | According to our membership data, and data from NCCPA, about 10% of PAs in Maryland are part of our organization. (NCCPA, 2023) |
According to our MdAPA Member data, majority of our members live in Central MD. Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, and Howard counties, and Baltimore City, are considered Central Maryland. (MdAPA, 2024) | Based on the 2024 AAPA Salary Survey, majority of PAs in Maryland work in a surgical subspecialty, and over half work in a physician office or clinic setting (AAPA, 2024) |
In September 2021, the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) published a statewide healthcare needs assessment. This report revealed that 19 out of 23 counties, and Baltimore City, are considered medically underserved areas (MUAs), for primary care. Additionally, 5 of these 19 counties have 100% of their population living within an MUA. (MDH, 2021) | According to the 2023 NCCPA Statistical Profile of Board Certified Physician Assistants, 14.8% of PAs in Maryland practice in primary care. This includes PA practice in family medicine/general practice, general internal medicine, and general pediatrics. (NCCPA, 2023) |
